Design Project!!!!

Hey guys.
So over thanksgiving break I'm going to go up to gloucester and meet with this local surfboard shaper and talk to him about getting a custom board made. I'm thinking about maybe doing something artistic with it as opposed to just getting a plain white board. I'M WONDERING IF ANYONE WANTS TO HELP THINK OF A DESIGN. Nothing to crazy probably, just a cool color with a little design. Although if you have a complex idea i'm not totally against it. the board is going to be about 5'6'' and pretty wide for a surfboard.
check out the links on the blog, sea surfboards and almond surfboards for some ideas if you want.
thanks. make cool things!
update: just found this website, go to the boards link (by clicking on navigation) and look at the photos of the fish boards. 1. they're beautiful. and 2. that's the kind of board it's going to be. i really really like the one that's baby blue and white with the red stripe in between.

some of my latest work

I realized I haven't posted much on this blog in a while, so I thought I'd share some of the stuff I've been doing.

This week, we had to create a series of symbols to represent everyday activities. Here are mine:

a sahweet adventure

So i was perusing the online information of Dustin Humphrey, a really really good photographer and originator of a company like the one we want to do (reelsessions.com), cause I want to send him the college essay i wrote about him; and tell him i love him, obviously.
The adventure:
Humphrey and 2 friends got very classic looking motorcycles and went for a road trip in australia. They documented the trip on the blog loverslandblog.com
All the photos are by Humphrey and there are some AMAZING photos. They posted a lot so it takes some commitment to get all the way through, but it is totally worth it.
It definitely gets the adventurous juices flowing.

new surfboard!

                             image 1390198592-0
So, here's the new board I'm getting. It's another gem off craigslist. It's rull short and stubby (only 5'4''!) and it is what I've been looking for for a while. Since it's really wide and thick it catches little waves easily (which abound in new england) yet it's designed to do turns and even airs, so the small wave design doesn't stunt me if I ever actually get any good at surfing. Anyways, I'm real excited. Boards from this company usually cost $600-$700 dollars but because of the glories of craiglist, I'm only paying $350. Maybe I'll post some sweet shots of me using it when I finally get to the ocean again.
that's all. (please remember I'm not actually very good at surfing)

Website

So my first website is up. It's ultra simple as it was a class project just to learn HTML. I will be adding more and beefing it up quite a bit over the coming weeks, so check it out sometime:

Business Today

So looks like my first college extra-curricular is officially set. I just got an email saying I have been accepted into Business Today, a student-run business organization that "tries to build relationships between executives and students." They run a magazine, and online journal, hold big international conferences, and hold guest speaker seminars on campus; all while macking on fortune 500 executives (they write articles in the magazine, come to the conferences, and are the guest speakers). Due to the groups insane corporate sponsor list, they're annual budget is between $500k and $750k. I sent in a portfolio of Lion's Roar stuff, my photo stuff, and some random design work, and got accepted to work on the magazine and the seminar team (getting fancy people to come talk). The magazine is the most widely circulated publication in the country. There was also some rumbling of creating a design team to coordinate design and the organizations "image" which would be awesome. Anyway, thought I'd let you guys know I've continued the whole student-run publication path!

My digital finals (read below post)

Computer Art assignment

One of my first art assignments has been in my class "Visual Form and Communication." Right now, we're focusing on using the building blocks of visual communication to send a message. In order to practice this, we were told to pick one major abstract theme. From this theme, we were to pick three sub-themes. For each sub-theme, we would create four representations. One theme all in points, one all in straight lines, and one using only curves. Then, recreate two drawings from each category digitally. Here's mine (my overall theme is "unintentional beauty"):

My Sketches

Curves- Grand beauty

Points- Minuscule beauty

Lines- Man Made Beauty

Thomas Campbell profile

Thomas Campbell, one of my favorite artists, makes amazing paintings/drawings that look like an interesting mix of computer graphic design and doodles. He also makes super cool surf movies that focus less on the most famous surfers on the professional circuit and more on people who are doing interesting things more on the fringes of the surf world. His most recent movie, The Present has a part about a growing number of people riding surfboards that are essentially just a thin plank of wood with no fins on the bottom.

The website/blog www.woolwoodandwhiskey.com writes a good entry about him leading up to a local showing of The Present.

Yard Sale Poster

I think both Clara and I were feeling the effects of going too long without some sort of CS4 experience. So we used a joint pre-college yard sale as an excuse to go all out designing a poster. We made it using only illustrator and we spent far longer playing on the computer than setting up the items for the sale. With the help of the nice people at Kinko's on route 9 we got some badass posters to hang around newton centre. I've decided that the posters were the direct cause of our $160 profit.

Sea Surfboards

Sea Surfboards is a surf company from Byron Bay in Australia. They get different artists to do amazing designs on the boards.
